Here are six storylines to keep an eye on Saturday in the sweepstakes and rated races at the 37th Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at SilverLakes Sports Complex in Norco, Calif.:

No Lane, so who's next?

With Malibu junior Claudia Lane, the reigning Foot Locker national champion, deciding not to open her season in the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race, there are several athletes now in contention for top individual honors.

Among the elite performers returning from last year, five individuals who placed in the top 10 in the sweepstakes are still scheduled to compete, including Walnut CA junior Chloe Arriaga, who placed fourth last season.

Haley Wolf of Desert Vista AZ and Catherine Tracht of Southlake Carroll TX also return, along with Haley Herberg of Capistrano Valley CA and Buchanan CA junior Meagen Lowe, who will be joined by sophomore teammate Corie Smith.

Quinn McConnell, a junior at Peak to Peak, could make it three wins in a row for Colorado standouts following a convincing victory last season from Nike Cross Nationals champion Brie Oakley of Grandview and Allie Chipman of Mountain Vista in 2015.

Jesselyn Bries of Sandra Day O'Connor AZ, Elizabeth Reneau of Argyle Liberty Christian TX, Bailey Brinkerhoff of Desert Hills UT and Alexis Gourrier of Centennial NV will also be in contention, along with senior Sara Leonard of Anaheim Canyon CA and sophomores Tori Gaitan of Great Oak CA and Akemi Von Scherr of La Quinta CA.

Great Oak looks to get title back

Following an all-time team record on the San Buenaventura State Beach course in its season opener Sept. 8 at the Seaside Invitational, Great Oak CA will look to return to Doug Speck sweepstakes supremacy after placing third last year behind Colorado programs Mountain Vista and Palmer Ridge.

Desert Vista AZ, which placed fourth last year, sixth-place Southlake Carroll TX and seventh-place Desert Hills UT also return to compete against Great Oak, Palmer Ridge and Dublin CA.

El Toro CA, West Ranch CA, Newbury Park CA and Palos Verdes CA should also be in contention to place in the top 10.

Great Oak won back-to-back boys sweepstakes championships in 2014-15, but will rely on the experience of seniors Carlos Carvajal, Jacob Korgan and Gavin Korby, along with sophomore Gabe Abbes, in its attempt to secure another title.

Big spotlight on Buchanan

Although Desert Vista AZ won last year's Bob Day girls sweepstakes title, for the past seven years, the top overall California program at the annual meet has been Great Oak.

Following a third-place finish behind Great Oak and Davis Senior in last year's Division 1 final at the California state meet, Buchanan is motivated to challenge for a championship and a berth at Nike Cross Nationals.

The Bears will have their first chance to square off against Great Oak, looking to improve on last year's fifth-place sweepstakes finish.

Led by the talented duo of Corie Smith and Meagen Lowe, along with Katie Nili, Sydney Fox and Amanda Dolberg, Buchanan will also be tested by Desert Vista, Palmer Ridge CO, Peak to Peak CO and Southlake Carroll TX.

Simi Valley was the last California program to defeat Great Oak and win the girls sweepstakes crown at Woodbridge, achieving the feat in 2013. Five of the past seven sweepstakes championships have been won by Great Oak.

Dublin seeks northern exposure

After placing fourth in the Division 2 final at last year's California state meet, Dublin returns a deep, experienced lineup led by Adrian Schroeder, Gaurav Phanse and Loic Scomparin with its sights set on not only contending for a state championship, but a possible trip to NXN.

The Gaels will get their first legitimate test against several of the top Southern Section teams in California, along with elite programs from four Western states in the Doug Speck boys sweepstakes race.

Dublin will also get an opportunity to face Division 2 rivals West Ranch, Ventura and Redlands East Valley.

Will Golden State's elite again be good enough?

In the battle for boys individual supremacy in last year's Doug Speck sweepstakes, California standouts Luis Grijalva of Armijo and Cooper Teare of St. Joseph Notre Dame both ran under 14 minutes to hold off Foot Locker champion Reed Brown of Southlake Carroll TX and Jaiden Melendrez of Desert Hills UT.

A similar clash of state standouts could unfold this year, with California stars Joaquin Martinez de Pinillos of Cathedral Catholic, Justin Hazell of El Camino Real, Carlos Carvajal of Great Oak, Elias Opsahl of Redlands East Valley, Kevin Ramos of Rubidoux, Evan Pattinelli of Flintridge Prep and Marcus Mota of Bakersfield Stockdale set to clash against Riley McDowell of Glacier Peak WA, Joe Cullen of Wyomissing Area PA, Ryan Matson of Palmer Ridge CO, Habtamu Cheney of Desert Vista AZ, Rylan Stubbs of Campo Verde AZ and Anthony Haren of Perry AZ.

California male athletes have won every individual boys sweepstakes title since the turn of the century, making the significance of a victory by an out-of-state star even more impressive.

Looking to boost ratings

The boys and girls rated races serve as the undercards for the sweepstakes competitions, but they also provide a springboard to future success for several athletes and teams.

Armijo CA standout Luis Grijalva won the boys rated race as a junior, then secured the sweepstakes title as a senior. Foothill CA senior Stuart Kendall will have a similar opportunity this year after prevailing in last season's rated race.

Rio Rico AZ star Allie Schadler ran the third-fastest girls time of the meet last season by winning the rated race. Palos Verdes CA senior Grace Catena is capable of a similar performance this season.

Great Oak's 'B' lineup has won the girls rated race three years in a row and have enough depth to challenge for a fourth consecutive victory this season.
