Justine Preisano, a North Carolina State-bound senior at Cuthbertson High in North Carolina who is a New Balance indoor and outdoor national relay champion along with a national indoor record holder, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Cavaliers competing Sept. 16 in the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race at the 42nd Woodbridge Cross Country Classic presented by ASICS America at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. Preisano finished 33rd in last year's 3-mile sweepstakes race in 16:48.8 to help Cuthbertson take third overall. She reflects on placing 15th in 18:49.8 on Sept. 8 at Friday Night Lights at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C., helping Cuthbertson secure the team victory. Preisano highlights the improvement of sophomore Josie Schihl and helping add depth to a lineup that also includes Virginia commit Stella Kermes and Georgetown-bound Charlotte Bell. She also examines the coaching transition for the Cavaliers, with Mark Vilardo taking over as leader of the program after 11-year veteran Kirk Walsh decided to step away from his role as a mentor following New Balance Nationals Outdoor in June at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Preisano revisits the emotions that the Cuthbertson athletes experienced during the spring season and especially at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in their final meet with Walsh as their coach. She also analyzes competing as a senior without older sister Alyssa Preisano, now a freshman at Wake Forest, as her teammate and continuing to contribute to the culture and tradition of the Cuthbertson program and the Cavaliers' pursuit of a sixth straight state championship, including the third in a row in Class 4A following a three-peat in Class 3A. Preisano explains her decision to attend North Carolina State and how grateful she is to have her recruiting process completed, allowing her to focus on academics, training and competing during her senior year. She also speaks about the support of her family and their ability to balance having daughters at different Atlantic Coast Conference schools, starting next year. Preisano also expresses gratitude for having opportunities to compete in several high-profile national events in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, including a return to race under the lights again at Woodbridge.
